Enrolment Procedures
Students are referred to Karonga School by the Hornsby District Office of the Department
of School Education and Training. Parents are given an "Offer of Enrolment"
and are asked to contact the school so that arrangements can be made to enroll their son
or daughter.

School Events
During the school year many special activity days are planned including our Swimming
Carnival, Sports Day, Multicultural Day and Celebrations of Learning. Parents are
encouraged to attend these special school events. Staff and students greatly appreciate
your participation in these special days.
Transport Arrangements
Students who are unable to travel independently may be conveyed to and from school
by contract buses / taxi arranged by the Department of School Education and Training. This
transport is arranged after enrolment has taken place. Parents have to apply for transport
and indicate why transport is required. Travel arrangements are reviewed regularly. Any
changes to transport arrangements require Departmental approval and consequently time for
such approval to be granted.
Please make requests for transport variations in writing. As a general rule, at least ten
days notice is required. This is particularly important if your son / daughter access
respite care.
Parent Support Network
A Parent Support Group operates under the leadership of parents. Meetings are scheduled
once or twice per term and parents / carers are invited to contribute and participate.
They usually take the form of a "coffee morning"; a guest speaker is
invited to address the group on matters of interest. Morning tea is served after the
presentation.
This is an excellent forum, providing opportunities for parent to socialise and discuss
shared interests concerning their children.
Parent / Caregiver Teacher Interviews
As we value parent / caregiver participation and see your child's education as a
parentship, there are several types of interviews conducted at Karonga.
Parents are able to talk to their son's / daughter's teacher at any time - they only need
to make an appointment.
At the beginning of each school semester, planning individual educational programs and
transition planning meetings are held to set learning goals.
Program Development
Access to D.O.C.S. (Department of Community Service) physio / occupational
therapy nurse and speech therapy staff on referral to consult and collaborate in program
development.
School Uniform
We are extremely proud of our school uniform and what it represents. We encourage all
students to wear school uniform each day. Wearing school uniform helps to establish a
routine and gives a sense of belonging.
It is important to label all clothing sent to school. It is recommended that a spare set
of clothes be kept in the student's bag or at school at all times - even students who do
not have toilet "accidents" may get wet and dirty. Please make sure that clothes
are suitable for the weather conditions.
Sufficient disposable toileting items (such as pads) should be provided for your
son's / daughter's needs each day. Some students may require cloth protectors, these
should be age appropriate to maintain the student's dignity in the school and community
setting.
